It's All River by Carla Madeira || Book Review

8/20/2026

It's All River by Clara Maderia is a translated work of fiction about a destructive love triangle and lost love. I did not know what to expect going into this beyond "oh, pretty cover". It was a complete win. Very much in the style of Sayaka Murata this involves a women's desent into madness as she desires a man who does not want her. He is dealing with a crippling loss that shattered his dynamic with his wife. We jump around their timeliners to learn how they ended up.

The writing is sharp with some beautiful prose scattered in there. I could not put this book down.

It was a difficult read in the sense of sickening at times, so do be cautious before picking this up if any of these things trigger you:
- Death of an infant
- Cheating
- Abuse
- Violence

If you think you can handle that, I'd recommend this book. It had me in a choke hold from the first abrupt sentence of "Whore. There was no other way to describe Lucy." sets the tone for a novel of passion, pain, and love.

Though dislikeable at times, I thoroughly enjoyed the unapologetic way the author wrote each character. Nothing felt glossed over to seem pretty.

All in all, a solid 4 star read.

- Anne.
