Ways I Use Rosehip Oil | Natural Beauty
8/07/2020
A year or so ago my husband bought me a bottle of pure rosehip oil after me going on and on about it for months. I'd read many positive things about the natural product in skincare routines, and given my sensitive skin I was quite curious. I think I've now gotten familiar enough with the product to confidently give some recommendations on how to use it. Without further ado, let's go..
Using rosehip oil as a facial oil offers such incredible results. Within a week or two of adding it to my nighttime skin regime I could both see and feel results. My skin was noticeably softer to the touch, the uneven colouring on my t-zone area became less noticeable, and my skin just looked plumper. It felt hydrated which isn't an easy feat for me in the Winter months. I never felt like the oil made my skin feel or look greasy once it absorbed. I think I first saw Alexandria Morgan use it in it's purest form in her skin routine.
As a treat every now and again (in other words, when I'm not feeling lazy) I add a few splashes to a handful of my usual body lotion and let my skin drink it up with more enthusiasm than normal. I can't rate this enough. I use unscented body lotion so it does leave a semi rosy smell, but my inner Grandma loves that. If I have a dry spot that needs more TLC, I'll rub the oil in by it's lonesome and I usually get instant results. It's rather magical.

In a similar fashion, when my skin is feeling a tad dehydrated I will add a splash to my bath. This is easily a great way of getting all the rosehip absorbed into my skin. Oils, bubble bath, and maybe some Epsom salts is a recipe for the ultimate relaxing bath.
Ever found yourself panic rushing in the morning as you realise you need a leg shave? I find the oil perfect for the dreaded dry shave. I drop a few hefty splashes on my skin, rub it slightly in, shave, and then wipe away with a dry flannel. With this method I haven't found my skin breaking out in ingrowing hairs, or developing a horrid shavers rash. Instead the legs feel moisturised, smooth, and ready for the world.

My most recent discovery has been the joy massaging a few drops of rosehip oil into my scalp an hour or so before a shower. After washing it out, I shampoo my hair as normal. It leaves the roots of my hair bouncy and incredibly soft. I was worried it would create a greasy feel like coconut oil. But nope. It's great, especially if you're like me and tend to overuse the dry shampoo.
All in all, I think the $10-$15 price tag for this 500ml bottle is definitely worth it. I use it so much and I've still barely gone through 1/4 of the bottle, despite having it for over a year.

Inside Birchbox | November
11/06/2019
Once again, this month I chose a curated Birchbox. If you don't know, since Birchbox revamped their subscription service, you now have a monthly choice of a few curated boxes, a substitution wherein you get your $15 in point form to spend on the site, or now you can swap your entire box for a full-size product of their choosing (this month was a Benefit highlighter). But I'm predictable and chose the skincare focused box for November. I adore getting skincare samples as they tend to last me at least a month, if not longer, so it gives my skin enough time to get used to a new routine and I feel like it's long enough for me to review the product. Without future ado, let's talk about the goodies I got this month.
Brand: Georgette Klinger
Product: Coconut Cleansing Milk
Full-sized details: $22
Sample size received: 15ml
I've never tried a cleansing milk before so this is an exciting product to me. The smell is very oat-milk inspired, which though sweet, is very addicting. I've never heard of the brand before, but after a look at their website, they seem very natural inspired which I love.
Brand: H20+ Beauty
Product: Hydration Sensitive Milk Serum
Full-sized details: $54
Sample size received: 5ml
Another milky product! I have heard of this brand before but haven't yet tried anything by them. Upon first use, my skin felt so silky smooth that I found it hard to not continuously rub my cheek. The packaging however doesn't appeal to me.
Brand: Philosophy
Product: renewed hope in a jar water cream hyaluronic glow moisterizer
Full-sized details: $39
Sample size received: 7m
Yup, that is actually the name of the product on my Birchbox handy-dancy information card. Philosophy is such a popular brand in the blogosphere, I've tried a few products from them before and always really enjoy them. So this is bound to be a hit for my skin.
Brand: Dr. Jart+
Product: Ceramidin Cream
Full-sized details: $48
Sample size received: 5ml
This moisturiser has been in so many monthly boxes that it's practically a regular in my routine. I do enjoy the results from it, it keeps my skin from getting dry and I haven't had any negative results from it. However, the smell isn't very pleasant and my skin doesn't automatically feel plumped after application. So, meh.
Brand: Purlisse
Product: Daily Lip Nourisher
Full-sized details: $16
Sample size received: 4.5ml
My lips are forever dry. I can drink 10 glasses of water a day and my lips will still be dry. I wasn't sure about this product as I detest the taste of mango, however instead it tastes (not that i was licking it off........) and smells like a Terry's Chocolate Orange. Not sure why, but okay. It's definitely nourishing and not at all sticky. So far, so good!
Brand: Derma E
Product: Hydrating Eye Cream with Hyaluronic Acid
Full-sized details: $29.50
Sample size received: Full-size
Getting a full sized product is always exciting, especially when it retails for a staggering $29.50 which is practically double the price of your box. As mentioned in a previous 'Inside Birchbox' I haven't yet found my holy grail eye-cream. Will this be the one? Only time will tell. I will definitely do a dedicated review after the suggested 12 weeks of use.
So, there we have it. Would you of chosen the curated skincare box? Let me know!
Product Empties #1
11/02/2019
I'm stepping out of my blogging comfort zone and stepping into the world of beauty! Kind of. Ish. Whenever I write about beauty, I feel like I'm about to be unmasked as someone who doesn't really have a clue when it comes to describing products. I like what I like, but I feel uncomfortable suggesting the items to others as the thought 'Have I tried enough of a variety of this product to wholeheartedly suggest it?'. But you know what, I think its enough to merely say that you enjoyed using a product. Not all of us are high end beauty bloggers, and that's what makes the community special. I'm going to try and urge you to buy Dove Body Wash in a bit, so I mean, high end may not be found here. I get Birchbox monthly so that has enabled me to try things that I would otherwise shy away from due to my lack of knowledge, so hopefully that will aid in my recommendations being more.. worldly.
As mentioned above, Dove Body Wash, $5.99 is my personal favourite when it comes to showering. I have sensitive skin that's drone to dry patches, and my more intimate body areas can be quite choosy when it comes to anything that can inadvertently travel down.. south. Dove is affordable, smells great, and is cruelty-free! The one I recently ran out of was the scent Blue Fig & Orange Blossom but having since purchased the Dry Oil version and found it to be more nourishing, I will stick with that from here on out.
Speaking of nourishing the skin, I go through body lotion like a cat goes through Dreamies. My favourite part of my nightly routine is lathering on some pleasant scented lotion and having my skin feel instantly plumped. Garnier Intensive 7 Days Hydrating Lotion was my favourite drugstore lotion. The smell was comforting, the lotion itself was the perfect balance between thick and wet, and it sunk into the skin within seconds. I'm speaking in past tense as I recently learnt that Garnier Body isn't cruelty-free which has stopped me from buying their products. As an alternative, I would recommend the Dove Cream Oil Intensive Body Lotion, $5.99.
I finished off this Beachwaver Great Barrier Hairspray, $28.00 that I received in a Birchbox. This tiny bottle has lasted me since late last year, and I've used it multiple times a week. Not bad going. It's the first hairspray I've tried that hasn't left my hair feeling like straw, and by some miracle, it actually keeps my curls in place. One major plus for me in repurchasing this, is the very effective way it can be brushed out of hair without leaving an icky dust feeling. I'd recommend!
Having Fibromyalgia (read all about that HERE), baths can be good on bad days. Sure it makes my skin feel sunburned in the aftermath, but for the soaking period, it's rather soothing. I've tried an abundance of bath soaks over the years that are targeted toward muscle soaking. And let's be honest, not many of us are actually loyal to affordable bubble bath. Enter in Dr Teal's Pink Himalayan Foaming Bath, $4.89. I really liked this, it gave my skin a tingle, the smell was pleasant (though I always put in a little rosehip oil which does overpower everything), and it did leave my skin feeling smooth and nourished. Not bad! I have already repurchased.
The only makeup item I finished up was the Eyeko Brow Liner Shape & Define in medium ( I couldn't find a link! The product may be discontinued). Though I've finished it up, I've yet to decide whether I liked this. I wouldn't repurchase, but it was rather fun to use. I think my main problem was the colour, it's almost green tinted which can look a little odd on the brows. The product itself lasted really well though (roughly 4 months without drying out), and I absolutely love the Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner, $22.00 from the same brand. So.. eh. I need the Natalie Imbruglia song Torn to be playing throughout this entire paragraph.
And my favourite product of this.. trash bag? ... err... empties basket. Beauty gurus always have those pretty wire baskets to hold this stuff, right? I'll work on it! Anyhoo, my favourite was definitely the Specific Beauty Advanced Dark Spot Corrector Pads. I 110% expected this product to be a gimmick. Anything pad form, I'm cautious about. But my skin absolutely devoured them. Using after washing/cleansing, and before face lotion, they definitely have a place in my skincare routine. I've never experienced a non-scrub to give me an exfoliating feeling before, and somehow without drying out my skin. A miracle! My problem is justifying the price. It works out roughly 67¢ per pad, which is quite extravagant.
So there have it! My first empties post. If this is something that reads well, let me know. I'm at a learning curve and really do want to step away from my blogging comfort zone. Have you tried any of these products? Do you want to? Send me a tweet at @RootingBranches or comment here with your answer!
Inside Birchbox | October
10/29/2019

This months 'Inside Birchbox' is very late. I was out of the country for most of the month (update coming soon) so I was unable to open my box until now. Better late than never? I did once again choose a curated box. Here's what was in my October box:
Brand: Balance Me : natural skincare
Product: Wonder Eye Cream
Full-sized details: 15ml, $29.00
Sample size received: 7ml
My curated box this month was heavy on the skincare products, which I love. As I haven't yet found a holy grail eye cream, it's always enjoyable getting to try out different ones. I have received a Balance Me eye cream in a previous box, but not this version. I remember it lasting me at least 6 weeks, which is always a bonus.
Brand: 11 11
Product: Fragrance Oil
Full-sized details: 0.3oz, $48.00
Sample size received: 1.2ml
Due to my lack of savings, fragrance always takes a backseat in my 'to buy' list. So I really enjoy getting samples of different perfumes. This scent is not as addictive as the 'Juliet Has A Gun' sample I received in my August Box, but it is nice. I especially like that it's an oil, thus much easier to get out of the little tube without spillage.
Brand: Air Repair
Product: Complexion-Boosting Moisturiser
Full-sized details: 2oz, $23.00
Sample size received: 7ml
This is a repeat product that I've receive a fair few times in my Birchbox. I don't mind it, but it isn't my favourite moisturiser. The scent is quite talc-like which I find a tad off putting. It does make my skin feel softer though, just no huge visible results unlike some I've used in the past.
Brand: Naturelab Tokyo
Product: Perfect Shine Oil Mist
Full-sized details: 120ml, $16.00
Sample size received: 30ml
These type of products are my favourite to receive as I enjoy using things like this, but would never pay full price without trying it out first. This is a hefty sample size, which I'm grateful for. Upon first impression, the smell is great (very salon like) and it made my hair instantly feel more conditioned without resulting in an oily look. Can't wait to try it out further.
Brand: Dr. Lipp
Product: Moisturising Colour Tint - Sweet Potato
Full-sized details: 8ml, $7.99
Sample size received: 3ml
In the same boat as the moisturiser, I've received a Dr. Lipp product before. I'm still torn on whether I like the texture of this extra thick lip balm, as it is very sticky and doesn't really sink into the lips well.
Brand: Saint Jane
Product: Luxury CBD Beauty Serum
Full-sized details: 30ml, $125
Sample size received: 3ml
This was the swaying product for me in deciding to choose this curated box. It's just fun to try out a (likely) very overpriced product, especially skincare. This bottle may be the cutest sample I've ever had in a Birchbox, and I appreciate the little applicator. My tiny sample sized amount of product is worth $12, which practically pays for this month's box. Insane. Can't wait to try!

So there was October. I already have an eye on which box I want to choose for November, so wish me luck in remembering to choose on time! Do you pay for any subscription boxes? Let me know!
Inside Birchbox | August
8/17/2019
I enjoy my monthly Birchbox subscription. Beauty boxes tend to have an 'eh' reputation in the Blogosphere but I think that's partly down to the many sponsored posts/videos we were bombarded with during the early days of bloggers beginning to get paid. I finally took the plunge in trying out Birchbox when I started to get into skincare but didn't really know what brands to try. Since then, I have kept up with my subscription as I found myself actually using and loving a good portion of the products that I receive. At the off chance that you've been debating whether or not to sign up for yourself, I thought it may be interesting to do an insiders look into a box every now and again. Without further ado, this is what was in August's box.
Brand: LIVING PROOF
Product: Perfect Hair Day 5-in-1 Styling Treatment
Full-size details: 118ml, $28
Sample size received: 30ml
Comb a pea sized amount through damp hair and in return receive volume, colour protection, softness, UV rays blockage, and protection from heat damage! This is a multi use product at it's finest and I'm looking forward to seeing how my hair takes it. The size is rather generous so I foresee it lasting me over a month, especially as I wouldn't choose to use something like this after every shower.
Brand: LIPSTICK QUEEN
Product: Dating Game Lipstick - Bad Boy
Full-sized details: $24
Sample size received: Full sized.
I've received many full-sized makeup products in Birchbox, which is always a perk. This lipstick is great and the price alone pays for the monthly box. However, I find the colour choice peculiar. I would've preferred a more versatile shade.
Brand: COOLA
Product: Dawn Patrol Classic Primer SPF 30
Full-sized details: 30ml, $42
Sample size received: 5ml
Near enough every month includes a primer or moisturiser, which is (sadly) my favourite part. Each one tends to be 30ml and lasts me exactly a month - it's almost witchcraft. Coola is a regular brand that gets included. With it's added SPF, I can't complain.
Brand: ILLAMASQUA
Product: Gel Sculpt - Silhouette
Full-sized details: 8g, $32
Sample size received: 4g
This is the risk product of the box, at least in my opinion. Not many of us contour, and the shade of something like this is of course a personal choice. The formula is soft and blends rather easily, however I'm not sure how often I'd reach for this.
Brand: JULIETTE HAS A GUN
Product: Vanilla Vibes Eau de Parfum
Full-sized details: 100ml, $135
Sample size received: Standard sample perfume spray.
Perfume samples are always hit or miss with recipients, as many put them in a drawer and proceed to forget about their existence. I personally love them as I haven't yet found my "signature scent". If I were more wealthy, this would undoubtedly be it.
Brand: LISE WATIER
Product: Waterproof Eyeliner - Acajou
Full-sized details: $24
Sample size received: Travel sized
A similar situation as with the contour stick, this is a risk product. However, I think an eye-liner is far more simple to introduce to your daily makeup routine.
Have you tried Birchbox or another beauty box? Let me know!
I adore face scrubs. Before I was in the know about skincare and the do's and don'ts (Okay, before I started reading blogs and watching YT), I used to scrub at my skin every night trying to shrink my pores and even out my complexion. Shockingly, it just made my skin a little dry and sensitive. Go figure. I'm still on the hunt for the perfect cleanser but I have a pretty good idea on what products work with my skin. I recently received the Dr Botanicals Coffee Superfood Renewing Facial Exfoliator for review and I'll be honest, I was a tad sceptical. Despite having only heard good things about the brand prior to this, I've never really tried a product that I hadn't openly searched for before. Was there a spot in my routine for a new scrub? The answer is yes.
Tanya Burr recently had a promotional code ("tanyaburr") for a free Rituals Yogi Flow Foaming Shower Gel, you just had to pay the £2.99 p&p. Not too shabby for a product that usually retails for £8.50. But I won't lie, it did take me a few minutes of pondering before putting in the order as I've never really entertained the idea of splurging on a shower gel. I'm usually the kind of girl that just grabs whatever is on offer when I do the weekly grocery shop. But as someone who struggles to relax (and who needs some extra content) I decided to take the plunge and test it out to review.
