Grief is like trying to walk through a balloon filled paddling pool, each balloon blown up with a sudden blast of sadness. Each day brings forth another walk through the pool, and you will inevitably step on some of those filled suckers. It's painful, tiring, and results in exhausting your brain and heart. It has now been almost a year since my Grandma has passed away, and I'm so very tired. It seems silly as I'm not in the UK, her home, I had moved so far away from her and the rest of my family. But that's just growing up, right? Becoming an adult means making sacrifices for your happiness, and mine was the entirety of my past. Yet I feel so... guilty.

Everyone knows the five stages of grief because of how many times entertainment has brought it up to us:

  • Shock/denial
  • Bargaining
  • Anger
  • Depression
  • Acceptance

What utter bullshit. As a planner I mentally felt prepared to go through all of these stages when I got told that she had passed away. Yet, nothing was or is in that order. Grief is messy, unmanageable, and something that you can't even comprehend as you go through it.

I sat there at her funeral and felt internally pissed off at all of the people that dared to sit there and mourn her after partly making her life miserable on occasion. I sat there and smiled during her wake, making chit-chat that was suited more at a celebrated event than a time of mourning. I smiled as people wanted a family photo, talked about memories of her with a little laugh-acting as though we weren't all breaking inside at the way we now spoke of her in past tense. I sat there and thought that I was in the anger phase, but hadn't I been crying myself to sleep every night? Wait, wasn't that depression? But that meant that I had foregone the bargaining phase. What was I bargaining? Was I meant to be on my knees each night wishing for her return? I didn't and don't believe in God, or heaven, or anything after you pass away. Should I of asked someone who was religious to pray for me?

This was what I felt during the day that my Grandma got cremated. I partly wanted to see her coffin get lowered to prove the loss as it truly didn't feel real. I say that, 4 months later, with it still not feeling real. I won't say it's harder for me, as I know being in a place that she once was everyday is much harder, but it's a different kind of mourning when you do it from so far away. It's easy for me to believe, and forget, that she's gone for good. I dream of her each night, some dreams are of us all realising that she isn't in fact dead and that we were all super dumb to even think that. I dream of waiting to bury her, as everyone around me tells me that she is gone. I can live in a life of make believe so easily, that it feels mighty tempting to do just that.

Grief is never easy, nor is it understandable.

If you're currently dealing with grief, I wish I had advice for you but I really don't. All I can say is this.. It isn't going to be easy, or something you can feel through a steady motion. It's going to be rocky, and you'll feel alone as everyone is either suffering through their own grief or people form the outside of it just won't be able to understand. Once the motions of the funeral and 'condolences' are done, they will forget that you're in a grieving process and that will be the hard part. You'll feel forgotten, you'll fear that they will forget the person that you lost. You, alone, will have to carry the memory. It will become a part of you, everything will feel a little heavy and there isn't a solution to help ease that.

I started this blog post with no point, and I'm ending it the same. This is literally the problem with my brain currently. It's muddled and not making any sense, it has no direction. Just a lot of words that mean nothing. If you've had any experience with grief and have any advice, I would be eternally grateful.

I'm heading toward change. I know it, everyone around me knows it. But I don't know whether I'm entirely ready to embrace it. I kinda want to hide in my bubble and allow everything to sweep past me, I want to be the blurred background of the photograph and not the focused one up front - I'm tired of looking like I'm in focus when I feel everything but. I fly in roughly two weeks to visit my partner for almost three months. I'll be away from home for three months. Those words aren't yet sinking in. The last visit was for five weeks and although I felt perfectly at home there and the time seemed to move far too quickly, I did miss my own home. Or rather, the people there. My mum and Bruno (that'd be my cat for those who don't know. PS: In Grace Helbig Style: "Your life is different now!". Bruno is the best.) I missed watching things with my mum, and having the option of company 24/7 with people I know off by heart. I guess like most people, I missed the homey feeling that comes with your original family home. It's to be expected, right? And I know I'm incredibly lucky to have the option of Skype and Facebook and WhatsApp so I don't feel the distance, but rather know it's there looming it's dreary head.

I'll admit, change scares me. It isn't the distance or the length of this trip, it's what is going to follow it up. I'm scared that I still won't yet feel ready to pack up my life and send it flying (literally) halfway across the world. Or worse, I'm scared  that everything will fall into place and I'll be ready. I know, I know "Don't look so much into the future. Focus on the now, what you want today." And you're right, hell, it's the advice I'd give to someone who was rambling about this to me. But here's the thing: I'm not sure who I am as a person, so how can I be able to figure out what I want for the rest of my life? I'm so god damn young, and lost. I don't even know what my hobbies are, or what I want to study. I don't know if I want to embrace veganism or simply appreciate from a distance. I don't know whether I want to buy a desk for my room - only, I guess that wouldn't be an option if I'm living 50/50  in two places. God, it's confusing. I keep finding myself wanting to make plans for a few months time with either my partner or mum, and they keep saying "Only you might not be here.". It isn't sinking in, and I don't know whether I want it to.

I'm foggy a lot and in those moments, I just want to be by myself in a place that I can call mine. I feel like I'm skipping a huge chunk of my life and forwarding the tape. Which is a good thing, I guess, as I'm incredibly lucky and have found someone who I would happily start a family with tomorrow - I get to miss out on the crappy dating moments that most have to deal with. And it isn't even about that, it isn't about either of my loved ones. It's about me. I haven't lived, I really haven't. Me and my mum haven't done half the things we've been talking about since I was a child, but then again, I don't think we ever would of even if I had no escape route. She's a homebody and I feel like I'm going insane if I'm cooped up for days on end. But then on the flip side of that, my partner works a lot and I'd be stuck in the house alone with nowhere in walking distance. Unlike at home (my childhood home), where I can go out into town any time I want and take myself out of the rut. I'm so conflicted, and this post isn't making much sense, is it? My thoughts are seemingly sped up today.

I want my worlds to collide, no matter how selfish that is to say. I feel like I'm debating taking myself out of this rut of a life, and just putting myself in another. Yay, me and my partner wouldn't have to solely rely on Skype for conversations, but then.. me and my mum would. Yay, I wouldn't be building my life and schedule around someone anymore, only, oh yeah, I would. Just another person. Yay, there'd be no more time-zone issues.. Oh wait, yeah. There would. Bloody hell. I wish I could take myself out of this cycle and just plonk me somewhere else - somewhere where the air is easier to breathe. I guess what I'm trying to say is, I'm both happy and unhappy in either places, for various reasons. And I just want a place where I can find a comfortable middle.

It doesn't help that when I try to verbalise these thoughts, people just assume I'm trying to leave them or say "It'll be hard." No kidding. I just don't think I'm ready for any of this, and it feels like I'm in an "All or Nothing" situation. I don't want to hurt anyone - myself included - but it feels like that's all everyone is asking of me.

As Buffy would say, I'm cookie dough and I'm not yet done baking. But everyone is trying to eat me.

Bath Musings Ep.01 || "Blame My Mind, Not Me."

4/25/2017

Bath Products Used: Lavender Oil. 5 drops.

Songs Listened To: Gabrielle Aplin - English Rain (Full Album)

Minutes Wasted: 30ish.

In less than two months I'm going to turn 21. 2 and 1. 21. Twenty-one. I'm not even worthy of a Taylor Swift song yet. I ought to be freaking out about ageing or something, I know, but instead I've been overcome with panic over how slowly I'm ageing. I'm tired of being in me, in this body, living with this mind. I want to call it quits. Part ways with a handshake. Life is dragging, but instead of dragging forward, like it ought to be, I feel as though it's dragging me down into this tub of water. Blegh.

Okay, that was a heavy first paragraph. I apologise. This possible new segment is meant to be a post cluttered with my bath musings and I'm sometimes overly bleak. Blame my mind, not me. Now there's a line that I need tattooed on me somewhere. To be perfectly honest, I've been foggy lately. My mind, that is. Not me. My mind. Wait, do they have to go together? Because I don't really want that. I sometimes feel like my brain is made up of twins - one is hopeful, dry but giggly, and the other.. well, she just stares blankly into space not really taking anything in. Do I have two people in my mind? Oh lord. Now I have that mental image. Literally. Mental. I hope not. Or do I? See, this is my brain. Half of my thoughts make no sense when I'm like this, and I hate it.

Foggy? You may ask. Yes, I respond, foggy. Like everything is just covered by a thick layer of fog, or dust, and I have to squint just to see the familiar things around me. Nothing really makes sense. Things feel, and look, out of place. My room doesn't look like my room, and I get confused about the feelings that arise in me when I'm around loved ones. I begin to question whether what I feel is what I actually ought to feel, or if I'm making it all up as I go along. It's a mess. My mind is a mess. Again, my mind, not me.

All of this makes no sense to me when I'm having a good day, which could be tomorrow. It could be in a week. But, in this moment, this is how I feel. Maybe that's why I'm "inspired" to start this segment. It's probably going to seem like a mess of a ramble to anyone else, but I don't know, I feel like I owe it to myself to document these things and hopefully, it'll help me in the long run to see how illogical this is. I know it's all illogical. When I'm questioning whether my fiance finds me pretty enough to not stray, or whether my mum wants to spend an evening with me.. I know it's stupid. But it's like my mind can't control itself. Nothing makes sense. Why would they want to love me? I can barely stand my own company. Lie. I can't stand my own company. I keep myself up at night by blasting music into my ears, or reading until words no longer appear like words to me, all to drown out my inner thoughts because they dislike me too. It's a game of pin the thought on Anne's heart and I keep losing.

It's exhausting to live with my mind. I know so many have it worse, and I can't begin to imagine how others manage to live like this daily. My heart goes out to them. At least, it will tomorrow. I hope. Right now, it seems to of got lost in the midst of the fog.
