The Anti-TBR Tag | Bookish Fun

Who doesn't love a good book tag filled with some tea? Full credit to the creator Nicole & Her Books! Let's get onto the questions.

Q U E S T I O N S

1. A popular book EVERYONE loves that you have no interest in reading?

The Game of Thrones series by George R.R. Martin. I didn't enjoy the TV show so why try and read a giant book series that may not even end? Intense world building and a huge list of characters are two things that I don't particularly love in a novel, so there's another reason it may just not be for me.

2. A classic book (or author) you don’t have an interest in reading?

Anything Charles Dickens. I'm trying to work my way up to reading A Christmas Carol this year, because duh, festiveness! But to be entirely honest, it's unlikely that I'll read it. Classic literature matters, but it can be hard to read nowadays when the topics and characters are such a far stretch away from the way we now view the world. And dayum, did that man write some humungous books. David Copperfield, Great Expectations, and Bleak House are all over  All in all, just not for me.

3. An author whose books you have no interest in reading?

J. K. Rowling. I read Harry Potter for the first time last year and though I did enjoy them, after all the asshole things she's since done, I'm 110% never going to read anything new by her. I will never willingly support her in my lifetime.

3.2 A problematic author whose books you have no interest in reading?

Mark Lawrence. I was actually looking to buy his Red Sister series because BooksWithEmilyFox adores it so much, but after all the Twitter drama around the author being V. E. Schwab... meh. I don't want to support him. He seems like a huge twat. If you want to know more about the drama, check out this tweet..

you can combine questions 3 & 3.2 or you can answer them separately if you have an answer for both

4. An author you have read a couple of books from & have decided their books are not for you?

Neil Gaiman. I fully see the appeal of his stories, but his writing just doesn't mesh well with my brain. Magical realism is already an iffy subgenre and I think he dips too heavily into the magical side of it. Way too whimsical and "out there".

5. A genre you have no interest in OR a genre you tried to get into & couldn’t?

Epic sci-fi. Quiet space-opera'y sci-fi I can get on board with. Such as The Long Way To A Small, Angry Planet or The Martian. Basically, anything that's more character driven and just happens to take place in space. But reading about space battles and/or other worlds? You've already lost me.

6. A book you have bought but will never read? (this can be a book you have unhauled/returned to the library unread)

Attachments by Rainbow Rowell. This author already has a huge question mark around her in my head because of the questionable Asian representation in Eleanor & Park, and Attachments is no different. It's so short and yet I've DNF'd it after a couple of pages TWICE. Maybe it's time to unhaul.

7. A series you have no interest in reading OR a series you started & have dnf’d?

I have a double answer! Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan and Artemis Fowl by Eion Colfer. I have absolutely no interest in reading Percy Jackson. There is no good reason why, it simply doesn't appeal to me. Artemis Fowl on the other hand, I have read. I picked up the first book before watching the movie adaption, and... eh. It was fine. But there is nothing making me want to continue with the series. I'm not the target audience.

8. A new release you have no interest in reading?

Middlegame by Seanan McGuire. I enjoy her Wayward Children series, but this standalone fantasy doesn't seem like something I'd like. The reviews are very mixed, but most of the people who gave it 5 stars enjoy weird books with a hefty character list. Which, as mentioned above, I don't particularly like.
